Nabokov "Good Readers and Good Writers"

There are many characteristics in the process of becoming a good reader, all of which should be used while assessing any type of literature. In Nabokov’s writing, “Good Readers and Good Writers,” he expresses many ways in which one can become a good reader. Nabokov believes that by rereading material and using your imagination, you get a real sense of the author and allow yourself to reach a better understanding of what is being read. He also believes that you can’t approach a book with premeditated thoughts. If one begins with a ready-made generalization, one begins at the wrong end and travels away from the book before one has started to understand it (Nabokov 613). You must read with a clear mind and try to disconnect yourself from previous assumptions.
I believe these, along with other attributes, would make someone a good reader. My idea of a good reader would be someone who truly involves him/herself in a book but also grasps what the author is writing. Being able to analyze and understand a book, using imagination, common sense and critical thinking to sum up the pages is what I consider an outstanding reader. Overtime I have found myself able to take on these characteristics that have allowed me to become a good reader. One way have I have extremely improved my reading is by going back and rereading information that didn’t quite make sense, which allowed me to get a better understanding of the author’s writing. The only way to truly become a good reader is to continue reading and enjoying all types of writings.
